Position Description:
The Senior Systems Engineer's primary responsibilities are to specify and implement systems and virtualization solutions for clients, ensure the stability and performance of client computing environments, and provide third level support for systems related support incidents and client requests.
The Senior Systems Engineer position will be a fit for candidates with an advanced systems and virtualization skillset who are customer focused, detail oriented, and have a desire to continue to develop their skills in systems and virtualization, as well as build new skills in related areas, such as storage or networking.
Ideal candidates will have a deep understanding of core Microsoft technologies, such as Active Directory and DNS, failover clustering, and experience with common Microsoft services, such as Exchange or SQL Server.
Key Task and Responsibilities:
Operations
Troubleshoot complex server issues, determine and document root cause, and implement solutions
Develop and deploy solutions to customer systems requests
Proactively identify and remedy risks in customer environments
Design, deploy, manage, and troubleshoot monitoring tools and solutions
Onboard new clients and manage portions of the onboarding process
Maintain systems devices:
Configuration management
Patch management
Server application management and maintenance
Customer Relationship
Take ownership for client experience:
Guarantee client SLA's are met
Ensure customers are satisfied
Look for ways to improve continuous service delivery
Ensure client documentation is complete, accurate, and up-to-date
Identify and recommend improvements to customer systems
Interpret metrics and explain technology concepts to customers in a way that is
meaningful and valuable to their business
Standards and Research
Develop and document systems standards
Research and recommend new systems technologies, tools, and platforms
Process, Documentation, and Automation
Develop processes and documentation for other engineers
Automate systems maintenance and operational tasks
Identify process improvements which will increase efficiency or reduce risk
Teamwork
Receive escalations from other levels, and work escalated issues in tandem when possible.
Escalate to more senior resources when appropriate.
Delegate tasks when appropriate to improve efficiency and offer growth opportunities for other team members
Cross-train with other engineers and provide cross-training opportunities
Mentor junior engineers and analysts
Sales
Notify Sales Team when there are opportunities outside of the scope of an existing engagement, such as a project or additional service to manage
Engage with Sales Team to provide pre-sales technical expertise
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 4 - 7 years relevant, hands-on experience working with systems and virtualization.
Work history should include customer or end-user facing positions.
Prior consulting or managed services experience a plus
Four-year degree in related field
Vendor level certifications:
Microsoft MCSE or equivalent experience. Multiple MCSE a plus.
VMware VCP or equivalent experience
Cisco CCNA or equivalent experience a plus
Strong operational understanding of core systems and virtualization technologies, platforms, tools, and services:
Windows Server 2K12, 2K8, etc…
Windows 10, 8, 7, etc…
Windows failover clustering
Active Directory, GPO management, AD Sites and Services, etc…
DNS / DHCP
User and group management
File and print sharing and permissions
Management toolset for Windows environments, such as WDS, System Center, Kaseya, and / or similar
VMware ESXi 6, 5.5, 5.1, etc…
Core VMware concepts: High Availability, vSwitches and vSphere Distributed Switch, vCenter Server, vMotion, Storage vMotion, etc…
Client ProLiant or equivalent server hardware. Blade infrastructure a plus.
Operational understanding of one or more common services in Microsoft environments:
Exchange
Office 365
SQL Server
SharePoint
Citrix / Terminal Services
Operational familiarity with core systems-facing networking technology concepts:
10 GbE and 1 GbE
IP, TCP, and UDP
Trunking and VLAN tagging
Familiarity with other systems platforms a plus:
Linux
Mac
Familiarity with additional security technologies a plus
Certification services / public key infrastructure
NPS / RADIUS
Familiarity with storage networking technologies and platforms a plus:
iSCSI / FC
NetApp
EMC
Familiarity with other networking technologies, platforms, and protocols a plus:
Cisco Catalyst switches (6500, 4900M, 4500, 3750, 2960, and/or similar)
Cisco ASA firewalls
Cisco and/or Aruba wireless access points and controllers
IPsec tunnels
Dynamic VPN tunnels (L2TP, PPTP, SSL, etc…)
Excellent troubleshooting skills
Able to break problems down methodically, including unfamiliar ones, and use a logical process of elimination under pressure
Capable of assimilating new concepts quickly
Detail oriented in all stages of the technology, project, and service delivery lifecycle, including design, implementation, maintenance, and documentation
Process driven and able to develop detailed documentation for peers to follow
Proactive and committed to excellence, with a strong sense of ownership
Able to work independently and within a team environment
Strong verbal and written communication skills for internal dialogue and communication with clients
Excellent customer service skills
B2B pre-sales experience a plus
