JOB SUMMARY
We are looking for a Manager of Software Engineering to support the construction and maintenance of a continental-scale observation system for monitoring ecological change over time.
The Manager of Software Engineering manages the team that is responsible for building the systems and processes required to develop a range of scientific information products used to support ecological monitoring. This position reports to the Director of Computing at our client.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the team responsible for the formulation of a design and development of software components needed for both ingest and processing of a variety of data input streams, including streaming sensors, observational, and airborne imagery.
Collaborate with internal data product and scientific staff to define the requirements for the development of scientific data products.
Manage and lead the development of high-quality, robust, production level code and technology while minimizing development and production support costs.
Determine priorities and schedule resources in order to develop and deliver releases according to schedule.
Coordinate, communicate, and collaborate with the entire CI team on both tactical and long-term issues/solutions.
Manage and prioritize technical debt, adapt to new hardware, and improve code to increase performance.
Meet established deadlines, with consideration to changing requirements and specifications.
Meet with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors, and others, to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.
Recruit, hire, train, mentor and supervise staff, and participate in staffing decisions.
Follows client’s policy and procedures (e.g., Corporate, CI, information security).
REQUIRED: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Five (5) or more years’ experience with scientific application development.
Five (5) or more years’ experience developing and implementing Java applications.
Five (5) or more years’ experience managing software projects and technical teams.
Experience with large scale environmental/scientific databases.
Experience with UNIX and Linux systems.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Experienced, highly motivated individual with the ability to take charge.
Ability to communicate and present clearly and effectively to a diverse range of audiences, including Senior Management, general employee population, scientists, and academia.
Ability to solve complex problems by applying experience, judgment, and creativity to both short and long-term challenge.
Ability to meet specified milestones, with changing priorities and changing requirements
while meeting budgetary requirements in a high-pressure environment.
Ability to work independently with little direction and/or supervision and in a team environment.
Ability to manage and effectively communicate with an experienced group of software engineers.

This is a term position with work scheduled until end of construction, which is anticipated to be September 30, 2017.
